FDA APPROVAL FACTS
On August 23, 2021, the FDA approved the first COVID-19 vaccine. Pfizer submitted the application for approval on May 7, 2021. Between then and approval, the FDA reviewed all data pertaining to vaccine safety and effectiveness.
Pfizer COVID Vaccine approval was based on safety and effectiveness data from a randomized, controlled, blinded ongoing clinical trial in approximately 18,000 individuals who received the vaccine and approximately 18,000 who received a placebo.
Vaccines were found to be 95% effective in preventing cases of COVID-19 and consistently safe.
